Thermostats are available in traditional analogue format or as digital versions with additional programmable facilities. Programmable thermostats for underfloor heating systems enable the system to be run at normal comfort and reduced ('setback') temperatures depending on the time of day. By running at a setback temperature, rather than simply switching off, the fabric of the building is prevented from cooling down to a point where it will take a long time to reach comfort temperature again. This also helps reduce the chance of frost and condensation problems for the building.
Because underfloor heating radiates heat upward from the whole floor area, the air temperature room thermostat can be set a little lower that you would use with radiators for the same level of perceived warmth. This is one of the ways that underfloor heating can help reduce energy consumption in buildings.
For most warm water underfloor heating applications, air sensing room thermostats are the best option. In certain rooms, where there are other heat sources (open fires, Aga type cookers etc.), or large glazed areas, a floor temperature sensing thermostat is usually the prefered option. Evenheat's staff will be able to offer recommendations on the best types of thermostat for your particular project.
