For electric systems, a floor sensing thermostat must be used to ensure that the floor temperature can not rise beyond the specified limit. This type of thermostat utilises a remote probe that is installed in the floor. The control itself is mounted on the wall in the conventional manner.
The thermostat pictured on the right is a programmable digital model that offers a seven day timer with facilities to set comfort and economy temperature levels.
Electric underfloor heating can be simply be switched by a timer to turn on and off at appropriate times, provided there is also a thermostat to control the floor temperature. However a more sophisticated level of control is often useful.
High mass systems, such as screed floors, will need an extra allowance for the warm up and cooling down delays when setting the timer. It is also a good idea not to simply switch on and off, but to switch between a normal comfort temperature and a 'set back' temperature to ensure that the floor does not cool below a pre-determined point. This minimises variations in warm-up times and helps protect the fabric of the building and its contents from wide temperature fluctuations.
